Maria Canals Barrera (born September 28, 1966) appeared on George Lopez as Claudia Palmero, the deceased mother of Veronica Palmero, Angie's niece, who granted power of attorney of the trust fund of her daughter to George through her videotaped will, who could then grant the inheritance to Veronica only if he deemed her to be responsible enough to inherit it in the Season Five episode "A Funeral Brings George to His Niece" (episode #15). Maria is perhaps best known for her rola as Theresa Russo on the Disney cable network series Wizards of Waverly Place.

Early life and career[]

Canals-Barrera was born and raised in Miami, FL, to Cuban parents of Spanish (Catalan) descent.[1] Canals-Barrera also speaks Spanish and took drama classes in junior high.[2]

Barrera received her Theatre degree from the University of Miami's drama school, and has worked extensively in theater in both Miami and Los Angeles. She made her network television debut in the 1993 TV series Key West and has appeared in the films America's Sweethearts and The Master of Disguise.

She has gained much recognition with comic book fans in recent years for her role as Hawkgirl/Shayera Hol on the DC Animated Universe series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
