Luisa Diaz (played by Rita Moreno) is Benny and Joe's estranged mother. She abused Benny as a child and Benny and George describe her as "old school". Luisa threw Benny out of the house when Benny was pregnant, but Luisa says that Benny left on her own. In the episode, "Super Bowl", it was said she was dead, but in a later episode she was alive and well.
Luisa made her lone series appearance in "George Testi-Lies for Benny", in which she and George attempted to get her to speak on Benny's behalf, when she is charged and brought into court for a robbery that an old flame named Eddie Carter (Richard Riehle) committed some 30 years earlier. This failed when Luisa revealed that Benny tried to give George away. During the episode, she admited that she and her husband sometimes had to spank Benny in the face.
Despite her relationship with Benny, Luisa appeared to get along quite well with George. During the end of the episode, it was revealed that Luisa has outlived both her husband and Benny's brother, predicting that Benny might be next, even though Benny thinks her mother will be dead before she is. Despite her age, she has also out-lived George's father and Angie's mother.

- It's unknown why Benny stated her mother died in a earlier episode, then appear later in the show alive and well, though it's possible Benny may've lied beforehand since she hates her so much.
