Emelina is Angie, Gloria and Ray's deceased mother. She married Victor "Vic" Palmero, but divorced him after she had an affair with an apposing man. In her only appearance in the episode "Meet the Cuban Parents" in Season 2, she and Vic flew out from Miami to visit the George and Angie and the family. Emelina seemed to enjoy the time spent with the family in L.A, except that, she makes a few remarks about George, while she still respects him. George stated that She hit George with a wine bottle when Angie and him got married, and still disagrees with it, as well as Vic. She is mentioned from time to time, but after her affair with another man later in the series, she files for a divorce from Vic, which he readily grants.
On the phone with her, Vic tells Emelina to "apologize to god for ruining 40 years of marriage" before he hurtles the phone into the bushes and storms away. George pretends not to see this but cannot hide the fact. Vic breaks the news to Angie sending her into a mood swing, which slowly comes to a stop as she accepts the facts and moves on. after Vic discovers that his fiance, Lindsey, was cheating on him with a man half his age, he almost gets back together with Emelina, and forgives her for her previous affair.
In the episode "Mementos", Angie secretly calls her weeks later and says that she never forgave her for what she did, and that she was a selfish Tramp. Emelina has a heart attack shortly after the phone call, and George reviles that she sent her a book, which said that Emelina will always love her, no matter what happens which cheers Angie up.
